So you have an interview tomorrow.

Yay you got the interview, but CRAP you got the interview - now you have to be on.


Here’s the thing, no one loves being interviewed. It elicits  fear, insecurity, anxiety and the dreaded “what-ifs”.


Interviewing in itself is an extremely awkward scenario. We’re in a very vulnerable position, and are literally “putting ourselves out there”.

 

You’re worried about being perceived the way you want to be perceived. You want to come across as cool, collected and confident. Because of course you do.


Unfortunately though, cool, collected and confident are three things that seem to scatter out the door when we’re put on the spot by potential employers.

 

But what if there were sneaky, natural ways to stay cool, collected and confident . . .

 

5 Natural steps to make it your best interview:

 

1. Make it a smart night-before. 

What you eat the night before, and how well you sleep can have a huge impact on your performance the next day. 

  • Make sure you eat a decent dinner not too close to bedtime. Make sure it has some protein in it (organic chicken breast, tempeh, salmon) as well as a starch (sweet potato, for example). The protein, as well as the starchy carbohydrate will help promote restful sleep, and boost cognitive performance. Of course, half the plate should be vegetables. 

  • Stop eating roughly three hours before bed for a deeper sleep and no “food hangover” that could impede your performance.

  • Have some calming teas with herbs like chamomile, lavender and lemon balm to help ensure you fall to sleep quickly.

  • Try to get 7-8 hours if you can, your tomorrow self will thank you.  

     

2. Make it a smart morning too. 

EAT BREAKFAST. Have a breakfast that has a decent amount of fat as well as protein, both of which will satiate you and not starve your brain of nutrients before going into the stressful situation. 

  • A smoothie with greens, coconut oil, some high fibre fruit like berries and protein powder would be great, or a bulletproof coffee with MCT oil, grass-fed butter and collagen protein powder works too! *Don't try that recipe for the first time on interview day though!

  • Don't overdo the caffeine. Do one coffee if you're used to it, then switch to tea.  Opt for green tea, which has the calming amino-acid L-theanine that will calm those nerves. 

     

3. Take some calming herbs

Here are some of my favourites, don’t take them all at once, but find one that works best for you. Whichever your preference, have a dose one to three times (separated by a couple of hours) leading up to the interview. 

  • Kava Kava (tincture or capsules, I like the tincture). 30-40 drops in a shot of water, hold in your mouth and then swallow. 

  • Holy Basil/Tulsi Tea. You can drink this before, during and after the interview. It’s extremely calming and helps your body cope with the effects of stress. 

  • Rescue Remedy Spray. This is a floral remedy that many respond well with. 

  • GABA (chewable). This is an inhibitory  neurotransmitter we manufacture, but also comes in supplement form. Chew on 1-2 of these in the hours leading up to the event. 

  • TIP: whichever herbal tincture or chewable you use, keep it on you so if the nerves are really creeping up, you can have them on hand.

     

4. En route to the interview, practice deep breathing and smiling. 

Focus on smiling, and taking long breaths in, and even longer breaths out. That’s your one and only job on this commute.

  • Smiling while you deep breathe is almost a “trick” to your body, telling it that all is well. In turn, you will help activate your parasympathetic nervous system (the opposite of the “fight or flight” response). 

  • On the exhale, make sure that all of the air is out of of your belly, before you breathe back in.  

     

5. Right before, do the superman pose. 

This is called “power posing” and it really works. Sneak to the washroom, or stairwell, or do it right as you get out of the car and do the pose as close to the interview as possible.

  • Put your hands by your side, stand up really straight, smile and hold it for 1-2 minutes. 

  • This is an incredible tool that has been proven to enhance performance, especially in interviews (1). 

  • Even if you feel silly, DO THIS.

     

Final Thoughts

 

These 5 steps should help ensure you give the best darn interview  yet. They’re not always fun as they tend to air on the stressful side, but with the right preparation, you can do anything, and do it well.
