5 Energy-Hacks You'll Wanna Know

August 1, 2018

Let’s face it - in today’s world of non-stop texting, social media-drainage, work emails and social expectations - we are a tired people.

And that’s okay - to a point - as long as we know how to hack it.

Clients are always asking me how they can improve their energy so they feel more vibrant and focused during the work day. And luckily, I do have some pretty stellar insights that can help YOU have more steady, less crash-y, energy throughout the whole day.

So let’s pep-up our step, shall we? Here are 5 essential energy-hacks to supercharge your day.

1) Make Fat your Morning Friend

A big mistake a lot of us make first thing in the morning is having WAY too many carbohydrates - cereals, toast or even just a fruit salad alone first thing the morning. What happens when you have all this sugar (without any fat or protein to compliment it)  is your blood sugar goes up REALLY fast. When this happens, your body responds by releasing a ton of insulin, which DROPS your blood sugar really fast. This is that mid-morning energy crash you so want to avoid.

Rule of thumb is this: GOOD-fats first, protein, and a little bit of carbs. Examples include adding a tablespoon of coconut oil in your tea with an omelette with low starch veggies like spinach and broccoli (use nutritional yeast instead of cheese for a healthy cheese swap) or make this smoothie.

You can energy-hack further by including MCT oil in any of your morning smoothies. MCT oil (like this one here) is an incredible oil that comes from coconut. It’s metabolized a little bit differently than other fats, and is essentially converted instantly to energy. It’s amazing for brain health, digestive health and can actually help you burn fat and lose weight!

By going heavier on the fats and proteins first thing, you balance your blood sugar and don’t spike it, resulting in more consistent energy right up until lunch.

2) Maintain Energy-Balance with Holy Basil Tea

Holy Basil (also known as Tulsi) is an incredible herb known for its adaptogenic properties, meaning it helps the body adapt to stress. If the body is running too low, it will naturally raise its frequency; on the other hand, if you’re a little high strung, having the tea will help calm your body down.

Sipping this tea throughout the day is a natural (non-caffeinated) way to stay energized without being buzzed. Learn more about Holy Basil here.

3) Get a Greens Powder for that Mid-Afternoon crash

That 3/4pm energy-dip is incredibly common. Instead of going for a sweet in the break-room, or a frappacrap drink, keep a greens powder in your desk to add to your water for when the energy-time calls. This is an incredible way to get a surge of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that will naturally raise your energy and give you the sustained energy you need to make it to the end of the day.

This is the greens powder I’m currently using (I like to switch them up!). It tastes like a pina colada (actually though), so it’s like a tropical break mid day. Fuuuunnnn.

4) Peppermint Essential Oil

This is one of my secret weapons. Peppermint is naturally invigorating and can give you a literal instant energy boost.

Keep it on hand in your bag, in your car or right in your pocket to sniff as needed. I personally take a big “sniff” right before I hit the gym for a pre-workout pump. Feel free to dab some on the inside of your wrists and back of the neck some sustained ‘mint!

Bonus - if you apply topically,  you’ll naturally energize all those around you by providing that subtle peppermint smell. You’ll be THEIR secret weapon ;) Skip the perfume, use peppermint.

5) Practice Lions Breath

This is a super breath-hack you can do throughout your day to oxygenate your brain and gain some mental clarity. Plus you’ll feel a little silly which is naturally invigorating in itself!

To do: Breathe in all the air you can, keep inhaling until you can’t inhale any longer. Hold that in-breath (smile) and then exhale all the air at once while extending your tongue and sighing. Repeat 2-3x.

Do this with the whole office for a team-building, energy-enhancing exercise!

So there you have it! Some essential hacks you can put to use immediately to feel vibrant throughout the day.

To all the ‘peps in all the steps!!
