The Morning Show Fat-Energy Smoothie

This smoothie's so good you'll finish it before you Insta it!

One of my biggest pet-peeves is when a smoothie has 14 different fruits and wee-little bit of almond butter. That is a TON of sugar and unless you are doing hugely rigorous activity, you don't need that much.

I'm not bashing fruit. I love fruit. It's full of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre... but it's not something to always go overboard on, especially first thing in the morning.

See, I do have a point here.

When you're smoothie is loaded with fruit in the morning, with little or no protein or fat with it, you send your blood sugar on a steep rollercoaster - resulting in a mid-morning energy crash an hour or two after breakfast.

The hack is making your breakfast rich in good fats, protein, and lower on the fruit and carbohydrates.

Save most of your fruit consumption for later on in the day (tip: saving your fruit for nighttime can actually help you sleep!) and make this super-fat, blood-sugar balancing smoothie I recently made on Global Television's "The Morning Show"

The secret ingredient is MCT oil - a super oil that is burned a little differently in the body than other fats. It's instantly converted into ketone-energy, which is another form of fuel your brain uses (the other being glucose). It's amazing for energy, brain-health and fat-loss - so it's an amazing oil to include in your diet - in smoothies, salad dressings and more.

In additon, the protein powder used is the one I'm currently using. It's a sprouted vegan protein from Iron Vegan - delicious, easily digestible and because it's sprouted, all of the nutrients become more bioavailable to the body.

Try this out, and see how your energy changes up until lunch (and the lack of that mid-morning energy crash!).

Super-Fat Morning Show Smoothie

  • 1 cup non-dairy milk (I used unsweetened coconut)

  • 1 cup organic coffee (can sub with an additional cup of non-dairy milk)

  • 1 cup ice

  • 1 tbsp.almond butter

  • 1 scoop Iron Vegan Protein Powder (chocolate or vanilla works best!)

  • 1 tbsp. MCT Oil (my favourite brand is Bulletproof's Brain Octane)

  • 1/2 banana (can omit this and use 1/4 avocado for a LOW carb smoothie)

Blend all ingredients together. *If you have issues blending with your blender, put the ice and coffee last, overtop the other ingredients to help weigh it down.

The only thing admittedly lacking from this smoothie is GREENS - so you can sub the banana for the avocado, add in a greens powder and/or ensure you get enough greens at lunch and dinner time!

Beyond that, this is a super energizing smoothie you can have first thing in the morning that'll keep you satisfied until lunch!

Enjoy slurpin' it downnnn!
